Decorating with Books

I was telling a friend recently that every time I see a new trend I ask myself “why do we like this?” And I found myself asking that in my own home as I look around and notice half my decor is just stacks of books! But, this isn’t just me you can go to any flea market or decor store and see books being used in a variety of different decorative ways.

So why do we like that? For me, it reflects something about my personality and our home. We all love reading and greatly value what a gift it is. I have loved reading since I was a young child to the point that I even had a birthday party in a bookstore (of which my husband loves to giggle about!) Reading was a big part of my childhood and I have so many memories of reading books with my grandma or my mom that are so treasured. The act of reading is so precious to me, be it a fiction book of exciting adventures or a non-fiction read about the work of motherhood. It is so precious because the act of reading enables us to know the Triune God by the reading of His Word. Every time I read a book with my children, even about a silly mouse and his cookie, I’m reminded that this skill is positioning them to be able to love reading God’s Word.

Also, for me, the moment that the Lord brought me to Himself happened while I was getting in some reading time for school at 8 years old but had chosen to read a book on being a Christian to complete the assignment. There had been a lot of things building to that moment, but as I read of my sin and came to understand my need for a Savior, I can remember stopping mid-sentence bursting into tears and telling my mom I wanted to be a Christian. It was a fitting moment for the Lord to use my love for reading (and school) to be the final means by which He would use to save me. And of course, with my husband being a teacher and preacher who also loves books, this reflects our personalities well in our home.

Now, using books to decorate certainly has the ability to communicate some type of haughty view of oneself but as in all things I feel it is all about the heart. The Bible reminds us that “The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks” Luke 6:45. This Scripture ought to remind us that whatever comes out of us is a reflection of what is inside of us. So sure, you could decorate your home in books, Scripture, etc. all for the wrong reasons. But, with the right motivation I believe you can use this simple decorating idea to remind yourself of various things pertaining to the faith and help your family be reminded of the value and gift of reading. Again, by no means is our home the standard. But this trend far exceeds our own home (ours is just what I have to take pictures of!)

What do you like about using books decoratively in your home? Share your pictures with us on social media so we can share with other followers for inspiration and ideas! And share in the comments why you enjoy using books in this way!
