As You Walk By The Way

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

– Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Understanding this verse was a pivotal moment in my life. It changed my course of action totally and wrecked all the plans I thought I was making for the future. It is so convicting, so clear, so all consuming. It shaped me as a mother. It’s why I’m a homemaker. It is what drives my husband and I day in and day out to continue to put in the hard work of making disciples of our children.

This is the verse that holds me accountable in car rides, in waiting rooms, on sleepy Tuesday afternoons, etc. to use my time intentionally with my children. The all consuming nature of sharing one’s faith with your children “when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise” shows the amount of time and effort that must be devoted to discipling our children. Not only that, but there is not a time that this verse does not cover that we are to be sharing our faith with our littles. That reality has caused us to intentionally educate our children, intentionally put on their socks, intentionally read certain books, and the list goes on. If you read through this verse carefully you see an emphasis on utilizing every aspect of your life and influence as a parent to love God and share that love with others (first, in your own home).

Therefore, I knew I needed this verse hung in my house. It is what has defined our path as a married couple when we were looking ahead to (and now in the thick of) parenting. But, once again, I really could not find this Scripture anywhere on things. And if I did, it cost me an arm and a leg! So I decided I would just craft my own. I made up the digital print below and sent it off to Office Depot to enlarge it and purchased a frame on clearance elsewhere.

This is the first thing you see when you enter our home. I feel like that is fitting and it’s positioning is intentional as it is what we feel is to define our home and lives (our love for the Lord). We feel it is fitting to be the primary piece in our home so that it will constantly remind us to utilize our home and every moment of our time in it to love the Lord and prayerfully instill this love in our family. There is so much I could write on this and elaborate on because it is such a passion of ours. But, I want to get out of the way and let the text speak for itself.

If you like our print and want one of your own, I can easily change the name and send you a digital download for only $2! Just send an e-mail to thechristianhome@outlook.com letting us know what name you would like on there and we will respond with the rest of the details and shortly after your custom digital print! Then you can do the same and send it off to a copy place to make it into your size or just simply print it off on your printer in a smaller one (to help you save, be sure and look for coupons before ordering!)

May God be glorified in your hearts and homes. And may your love for Christ be shared and on display in your homes today.
